arwan caveswere of probable Upper Pliocene age.No specific date can be assigned tothe Parwan Cave, but the generalorder of potassium-argon dates fromthe Parwan area is 2i million years,so the Parwan Cave is almost certainlyvery much older than the PanmureCave. 4. The Porndon Caves The caves of Mt. Porndon occur ina basalt disc surrounding and under-lying the scoria cones, and have beendescribed by Skeats and James (1937),who show the cave locations, but donot present cave surveys. There aretwo caves, which have been namedArch Cave (for the entrance archmade by collapse of part of the roof)and Rubbish Cave (for the obviousreason). Porndon Arch Cave This is one of the simplest of alllava caves. Almost straight and per-fectly tunnel-shaped for most of itslength, it has an intact lining on muchof its walls, a flat lava floor, andbenches along parts of the wall-floorjunction (Figure 6). Skeats and James believed thatpolygonal jointing of the basalt flowcould be seen in cross-section in the

This may be true perhapsin a small area near the entrance, butmost of the polygonal cracks seen inthe cave are in the lining, behindwhich is normal layered lava (seeOilier, 1965) which does not havethe closely spaced polygonal jointstypical of dense and uniform basalt. Porndon Rubbish Cave Lava caves were originally conduitswithin solid lava through whichmore liquid lava flowed, and in someinstances the contents have done littlemore than pull away from the roofof the tube they were filling. This isdemonstrated to perfection at PorndonRubbish Cave. At the entrance thefloor is slightly convex and cracked, but 18 feet below the roof. Within thecave the roof and floor converge, andgradually the floors curvature comesto match that of the roof, until theymeet at a common boundary, whichis the edge of the original lava conduit. This is show
