ar theWilmington and Baltimore and Camden and Amboy roads werebuilt, as was the Reading road in the following year. The Penn-sylvania road was chartered in 1846. In 1834 the Columbia line, partly canal and partly railroad, was opened from Philadelphiato Pittsburg, nearly 400 miles. It was intended to be worked byhorse power, but locomotives were adopted about 1836. Philadelphia suffered severely during its earlier history fromepidemics of vellow fever and later from cholera. From 2,314cases of the latter disease in 1832 there were nearly 1,000 deaths. The grounds were purchased for the Fairmount Water Worksin 1812. The purchase of property adjoining this, with a view topreserving the Schuylkill River, beginning with Lemon Hill, bought from the assets of the United States Bank in 1844, led tothe formation of one of the largest and finest natural parks inthe world, equaled in extent only by Epping and Windsor Forestsin England and by the Prater in Vienna.
