RICHARD ARNOLD Generals of the Union Army NOTE—In the following pages will be found a short biographical sketch of every officer who attained the full rank of major or brigadier-general during the war. Those who re- ceived these titles by brevet only are not included. Abercrombie, John J., brigadier-general, was born in Tennessee in 1802, and died in Roslyn, N. Y., in 1877. Entering West Point from Tennessee, he was graduated in 1822, served as adjutant in the 1st infantry from 1825 to 1833 and was made captain in 1836. He served in the Florida war, and was brevetted major for gallant conduct at the battle of Okechobee. Then, until the outbreak of the Mexican war, he was engaged in frontier duty in the west.
