Aim AH AM LiNCLON, INTRODUCTORY. One afternoon in September of the memorable and fate-ful year of 1801, a line of men was formed in the State Fairgrounds at Indianapolis, then known as Camp Morton. Filingout of the gate, witli measured steps, timed to the music offife and drum, the column wound its way to Pennsylvaniastreet, down that to Washington street, thence west until,after various turns, it arrived at a point, then an open com-mon, on the bank of White river, ju-t above the old TerreHaute and Indianapolis railroad. Here a temporary campwas established. This was the virtual beginning of a relation between thesemen that was to continue for three yeirs, in fact on throughlife. There were then close to an even thousand of them, andabout one hundred others, all told, joined them at differentintervals afterwards.
