Farms canbe bought for small sums of money, and the ranges forcattle and sheep are usually public lands, which costnothing except a small tax which is paid into thetreasury of the township or commune. Recentlyseveral new industries have been established. A Ger-man company has built a large beet-sugar factory withinsight of Belgrade, and a linen manufactory has beenerected by Belgian capital. There are several matchfactories, flour-mills, tanneries and breweries, and thegovernment is proposing to pay subsidies to encouragethe introduction of woolen mills and other mechanicalindustries in different parts of the country. Servia isprospering. There is plenty of work at good wages,but at the same time considerable emigration to theUnited States and to the neighboring countries,because of a disinclination among the young men tospend five years of their lives in the military service.

THE CAPITAL OF SERVIA 263 At market we saw a bride in the native dress, whohad just come from the church where the marriageceremony had been performed, and was receiving thecongratulations of her friends and neighbors, while herproud husband stood at her side and was envied. Shewas a buxom damsel of the Swedish type, with blondhair and a clear blue eye. Her head was covered witha peculiar turban, from which hung clusters of silvercoins. Long strings of coins were suspended from anecklace and a girdle, and hung over her shouldersand hips, and must have been very heavy. Thesewere her dowry. She had begun to save them duringher childhood, and instead of putting them in asavings-bank had strung them together for ornamentsand had worn some or all of them on festive occasionsto attract the attention of the eligible young men ofthe neighborhood.
