[edit]DescriptionThe Town and Harbour of Halifax as it appears from George's Island, 1759 Original.5391.jpg |
English: The Town and Harbour of Halifax as it appears from George's Island, 1759, by James Mason after Richard Short & Dominic Serres. Engraving based upon sketches by Richard Short from which Dominic Serres' The Elder' painted an original oil painting, which in turn was engraved by James Mason, in 1760. This, a view looking northeast from George's Island in 1759, is Citadel Hill and the Town of Halifax at left. Bedford Basin in the middle distance, plus Dartmouth at the far right. Also the various protected anchorages adjacent to the naval station at Halifax, Nova Scotia, during the Seven Years War. Short's image also gives significant information regarding the depth of the two water passages that flank George's Island, that on the left, deep & large enough to enable large square rigged ships & men-o'-war to pass, whilst the shallower on the right, for schooners and smaller vessels. On George's Island may be seen part of Fort Charlotte and the Island Prison Camp, there was also a Look Out Point, an Acadian Prison camp, and a Quarantine Station. |
