Tothe south of the river the French on the 20thhad not been idle. Our Allies had advancedin the preceding fighting almost up to thegates of Peronne ; they were at the bottomof the loop of the Somme. To enlarge thispocket southwards towards Chaulnes and therailway Chaulnes-Peronne was the next stepto be taken.
