ABANDONED TRENCHES ALONG THE TIGRIS. before his troops received the order to goforward. As the British force under his command, nowconsisting apparently of two divisions, con-fronted an enemy based on Baghdad, and theTurkish provinces beyond Baghdad, it wasfacing north-west. Its own base was the sea, lying to the south-east, from which supphesand reinforcements could reach it by the deep-water channel of the Shatt-al-Arab, running upto and beyond its headquarters at Basra. Theleft of the force consisted of the garrisonholding Shaiba and perhaps Nakhaila. Infront of the centre was an advanced detaclimentat Kurna. On the right was a brigade atAhwaz in Persia. Tlie position may be cona-pared to an irregular fan, of which the handlewas the Shatt-al-Arab, and the points of theopen spokes, going from east to west, wereAhwaz on the Karun, Kvu-na on the Tigris, andNakhaila on the Euphrates. The enemy had aforce at Nasrieh on the Euphrates, facing theBritish left, but at a distance of 70 or 80m
