On the left of the five-mile front the attack beganfrom what was the most advanced and most northerlypoint of the French lino, at tho Cote du Poivro and thoquarries of Haudromont, about two miles east of theMeiu^e at Vacherauville. Between this point andThiaumont, a distance of a mile and a half, the firstadvanca carried the French infantry about a mile tothe road running west from Douaumont to Bras, upthe ravines of Couleuvre and La Dame. In tho nextsection troops starting from Fleury moved almost directlynorth towards Douaumont, up and to the left of theRavine Chambitoux and took the Bois de la Caillette,so that the way to Douaumont was now open on bothsides, and further to the right the attack was pushedforward in a straight line between Douaumont andBezonvaux till it nearly reached the Fort of Vaux midwaybetween them.
