RUSSIANS IN CHAMPAGNE.Mounting a machine gun on a parapet. a fairly lively fusillade in the outskirts ofSoyecourt The chief event on this side was the enemyseffort to assume the initiative and create adiversion from the Somme fighting by attacksupon the centre of the western front north ofthe Aisne, at Ville-au-Bois, and in Champagnewest of Prosnes. The latter attack was the moreimportant. Delivered on a front about one milewide, it gave the Germans no permanentadvantage. For a time they succeeded inoccupying a few trenches, but a counter-attackdislodged them without great difficulty. The Germans made a small raid on ourtrenches just to the west of the Ypres-Pilkemroad, but were at once counter-attacked anddriven back. We also raided the Germantrenches farther to the south, after a pre-liminary bombardment. Here the enemy viasfiist met outside his own wire and forced toretire with a loss of some 30 killed.
