for the support of three chaplains inthe Temple, who were to say mass daily in the church, and grantedthem lands and houses, and empowered them to hold fairs andmarkets in all parts of the kingdom. Above the portrait are theconjoined arms of Normandy and Aquitaine, with the crescent andstar as displayed on the great seal of king Henry the Third, andbelow are the ancient arms of the Knights Templars, now borne bythe honourable society of the Middle Temple. All the figures ofthe kings are surrounded with a scroll ornament, drawn in powerfulcolours, and they are executed in a style corresponding with that ofthe church decorations of the time of Henry the Third. Below the last-named portrait of king Henry the Third, close tothe north-west corner of the church, is a small Norman doorway,opening upon a dark circular staircase which leads to THE PENITENTIAL CELL. This dreary place of solitary confinement is formed within thethick wall of the church, and is only four feet six inches long, and

Twosmall apertures, or loopholes, four feet high and nine inches wide,have been pierced through the walls to admit light and air. Oneof these apertures looks eastward into the body of the churchtowards the spot where stood the high altar, in order that the prisonermight see and hear the performance of divine service, and the otherlooks southward into the Round, facing the west entrance of thechurch. The hinges and catch of a door, firmly attached to thedoorway of this dreary prison, still remain, and at the bottom of thestaircase is a stone recess or cupboard, where bread and water wereplaced for the prisoner.
