Il s’agirait de la première version imprimée de Genji monogatari (le Dit du Genji). Elle apparaît dans 54 volumes publiés au cours de l’ère Keichō (1596–1615). C’est l’un des tout premiers livres réalisé à partir de caractères hiragana. Seules deux autres copies manuscrites existent encore. L’hiragana est une écriture cursive du syllabaire japonais. Considéré comme l’un des plus vieux romans au monde, Genji monogatari fut écrit au début du XIe siècle par une dame de la cour connue sous le nom de Murasaki Shikibu. Son histoire s’intéresse à la vie et aux amours du prince Genji ainsi qu’aux liaisons de ses enfants et de ses petits-enfants, reflétant la vie à la cour japonaise durant l’apogée de la période Heian (794–1185). L’histoire est racontée en prose et comporte aussi près de 800 poèmes intégrés au récit.

It is said to be the first printed version of Genji monogatari (The tale of Genji) and appears in 54 volumes produced in the Keichō Era (1596–1615). This is one of the earliest books for which hiragana types were used, and only two others are extant as scribal copies. Hiragana is a cursive script of the Japanese syllabary. One of the oldest novels in the world, Genji monogatari was written in the early 11th century by a court lady known as Murasaki Shikibu. Her story concerns the life and loves of Prince Genji and the affairs of his children and grandchildren, reflecting Japanese court life at the height of the Heian period (794–1185). The tale is told in prose and also has nearly 800 poems embedded in the narrative.
