Summary

[edit]
Description

The placard at the Victoria and Albert Museum reads:

Italy, Rome About 400 Inscribed in Latin, 'Of the Symmachi' Museum no. 212-1865 Ivory

The interest in ancient Roman religions continued for several decades after Christianity became the official relgion of the empire. At the end of the 4th century it was actively revived by senatorial families like the Symmachi, whose name can be found on this panel. Carved with great beauty and elegance, the panel depicts a pristess or initiate performing a rite at a pagan altar. It was once part of a hinged diptych.
