Image title | When the first King of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, finished taking Lisbon back from the Moors, he decided the newly Christian city needed a saint to protect it. So, he dispatched a naval crew to secretly raid the 7th century church built over St. Vincent's tomb on what is now known as Capt St. Vincent. Ancient Roman and Moorish texts had remarked that a flock of ravens had always stood guard over the tomb. When the sailors grabed the body to bring it to Lisbon, the ravens came with the ship back to Lisbon since they refused to leave the saint's body. That is why the symbol of Lisbon is a ship with two ravens. |
