[edit]DescriptionThe Stubacher Sonnblickkees Glacier in Austria (Copernicus 2024-09-14).png |
English: This Copernicus Sentinel-2 image acquired on 10 August 2024 shows the Stubacher Sonnblickkees glacier in the federal state of Salzburg in Austria. Situated at an altitude of 2,700 metres, the glacier has undergone considerable losses in size and mass due to high temperatures. In the last 25 years, it has lost 45 million cubic metres of ice, and half of its total mass and surface area. Other glaciers in Salzburg are similarly decreasing in size, and researchers studying this trend are linking it to the greenhouse effect and the changing climate. Thanks to a high temporal resolution, the open data delivered by the Copernicus Sentinel satellites allows for the reliable and continuous monitoring of glaciers around the world. This information supports researchers and decision-makers in the development of strategies for addressing challenges stemming from climate change. |
