When two odd days come together, asat the end of months having thirty-one days, the switches areleft up until the middle of the first odd day and then arethrown down until the end of the first day of the month.The man throwing the battery switches also tests the batteriesby placing a lamp bank of 2-volt lamps across the switches.Batteries found weak are replaced by others and are rechargedin a charging rack. The battery terminals outside the boxesare scraped clean once each month and a thick coating ofvaseline is applied over them. When cars are not in use, orwhen the surplus equipment is stored during the winter, thecompressor motors are run for about half an hour once each Plate XXIX
