ins. below the surface ofthe street. The 9-in. rail was laid and bolted with four boltsand clips to Carnegie steel ties spaced lo-ft. centers. These per day of ten hours, this work includes the space withinthe rails, 2 ft. on the outside and 2 ft. in the devil strip.By the use of the continuous concrete mixer a uniformmix was secured for the entire job with a saving of about10 per cent of cement. The pavers followed behind theconcrete gang, using 3 ins. of coarse gravel for a cushionand on that the No. i Medina block stone was placed. Fullstone paving was employed between the rails and in thedevil strip, and toothing was laid along the outside of thetrack to receive the asphalt, which was placed up against it.The stone paving was then pounded and slushed with agrout composed of a mixture of one part Portland cementto two parts of sand, which completely filled up the voidsbetween the stones, making a perfect bond. This style ofconstruction costs about $5 a running foot of single track.

Y. ties are of I-beam section, top flange, 4J/2 ins.; bottomflange, 8 ins.; depth, 53/^ ins.; 6 ft. long and weigh 19.7lbs. per foot. The track was then surfaced and linedby blocking up under the ends of the ties, and %-in. tie rodsspaced at 5-ft. centers were put in. A 6-in. trench wasdug under each tie. Concrete, proportioned one part ofLehigh Portland cement, three parts of clean, sharp sandand five parts of 2j^-in. stone, was then put in by a Footecontinuous concrete mixer. This mixer in operation isshown in one of the accompanying illustrations. One pairof wheels ran on the asphalt outside the track and theother pair of wheels on 5-ft. planks properly blocked up sothat no weight was brought upon the track. The concretewas shoveled into the trench to a depth of 6 ins., was welltamped under the rail, and was then thoroughly poundedafter being leveled to the top of the ties. Three ties we
