. The rolling stock is by nomeans as elegant as in many American cities, but the carsare substantially constructed and answer all practical pur-poses. The tracks reach out in every direction and convergeinto the heart of the business district. While no transfersare allowed, the fares are uniformly 2 cents, with the ex-ception of one circular excursion route along the sea front, upon which 3 cents are collected. Very general use ismade of the service and owing to the low fares cars aretaken for distances so short that otherwise they would becovered on foot. Electricity replaced horse cars and om-nibuses in 1900, but the new system was not completed until 1902. A table of .statistics ispublished showing the length ofthe lines, number of employees, mileage traveled, number ofpassengers carried and the gro.^sreceipts since 1900, when the2-cent service was partially in-augurated. 654 STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL.
