oBryan, Ohio, was completed about a year ago, and the equip-ment and power station were fully described in the StreetRailway Journal of Oct. 21, 1905. Since that time the roadhas changed hands, and is now being operated by E. E. Dar-row, managing engineer, who has instituted a number of in-novations in operating practice and in new equipment whichare quite interesting. COST OF CAR-LOAD FREIGHT As outlined in the previous article, the road does quite anextensive car-load freight business. There has long been agreat difference of opinion among traction-line operators as tothe profit aspect of this class of business, and even amongthose roads which are engaged in it there has been a woefullack of data as to the cost of operating freight trains and theeffect such traffic has upon the general welfare of the road. Except in passing through towns the rights ofway of the two roads adjoin one another, and in view of theremarkable freight-handling facilities of this great steam road,it would seem at first glance to be the height of folly to at-tempt to compete with it on bulk car-load freight. It appears,however, that the steam road has more business than it canhandle. This particular district is a very prosperous one,originating more than the average amount of freight, andthe steam road seems to be perfectly willing that the electricshall handle a few cars a day between local points.
