(Vol. XXVI. No. 19. control. The high-tension cables are led to a carefully in-sulated board on the other side of the building facing the mainswitchboard. Before leaving the subject of sub-stations, it might be wellto mention that all of them are provided, on emergency, withthe means of augmenting their capacity to the extent of 1000kw through the use of portable sub-stations. These consist of THIRD RAIL Direct current at a potential of 600 volts is led directly tothe third rail from the different sub-stations, and is carried inthis way to considerable distances, great care being takenwith this third-rail installation to guarantee the safety of pedes-trians, and no expense has been spared to attain this result. The rail is laid at the standard distance from the track rail

VIEW OF THE TWO PORTABLE SUB-STATIONS AND THE STEEL-CONCRETE BUILDING FOR HOUSING THEM steel cars, each carrying a 1000-kw rotary converter and threestatic transformers. Two such portable sub-stations have beenbuilt. They were designed primarily not only to reinforce thepermanent sub-stations, but to maintain the potential at anypoints where traction might temporarily be very heavy. Suchconditions would be met at the different race tracks, and there-fore buildings have been provided at Belmont Park race trackand at Springfield Junction, near the Metropolitan race track,where these portable sub-stations may be housed and con-nected up. While the use of portable sub-stations is not new, yet it isinteresting to know that they are being used on a larger scale adopted by this road, the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Inter-borough Rapid Transit Company, namely, 27 ins. from thegage line of the track to the center line of the third rail, and
