Holland Palace Car Com-pany, has been in Cleveland conferring with a number of prom-inent interurban managers relative to the practicability of in-stalling parlor car service on some of the long connecting linesin which Cleveland people are interested. The Holland Com-pany is building some magnificent 60-ft. parlor chair cars andis working out a number of long routes over which it believessuch cars could be operated profitably. Nothing definite hasbeen accomplished. \ January 21, 1905.) STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. 133 A STEAM SHOVEL FOR ELECTRIC RAILWAY GRADING In the construction of electric interurban railways, the grad-ing is frequently done by the slow process of employing horsesand scrapers. Often, however, this could be accomplishedmore economically by the use of a steam shovel, but the extentof a single job of grading may not warrant the expense of pur-chasing a steam shovel of the size as ordinarily constructed, TERMINAL FOR NEW JERSEY & PENNSYLVANIA TRACTIONCOMPANY IN TRENTON

and these are, moreover, too heavy to be readily transportedfrom one job to another. The Vulcan Iron Works Company, of Toledo, Ohio, has de-signed a shovel that is peculiarly adapted to construction workon electric railways. This is the Little Giant TractionShovel, which weighs but 26 tons. It is well illustrated in thetwo accompanying illustrations, showing it in service on theRockefeller extension of the Chicago & Milwaukee ElectricRailway. A notable feature in one of the illus-trations is the elegant bank and slope given tothe cut by the machine. The shovel is mounted on wheels withbroad tires and is self-propelling. It is 10 ft.wide over all and 23 ft. long. The car itselfstands 13 ft. high. The dipper has a clear liftabove the ground of 8 ft. 6 ins., and will cuta bank 16 ft. high. One double engine hoiststhe dipper and another swings the crane. Itwill work in clay, sand, gravel, iron ore andsimilar materials, and is well adapted
