EATS INTHE FIRST-CLASS COMPARTMENT compartment have a saloon of standard character. The carsare handsomely finished in cherry and ash, and have decoratedbirch ceilings. The seats in the first-class compartment are ofspring cane, while those in the second-class have cherry slats.The seats have reversible backs and are manufactured by thebuilder. MODEL OF NEW YORK CITY RAILROAD COMPANYS METRO-POLITAN COMBINATION CAR very popular with them. It was first introduced in New Yorkearly in the fall of 1898 to meet a decree of the Board ofHealth, that every fourth car in summer be closed. Smokingwas allowed in the open part, and when cold weather camealong, the requests to continue the combination cars in servicewere so numerous that they became a regular part of winter aswell as summer equipment. The car is a modification of theCalifornia type, and was planned by John A. Brill, vice-president of the J. G. Brill Company. The model was made entirely at the works of the J. G. BrillCompany, and both the body and trucks are completely opera-tive. The window sashes may be raised and lowered, the seatbacks reversed, each section of the twin-doors open simul-taneously, the brakes are operated by ratchet-brake handles,and every other part is reproduced exactly in miniature.
