On the cut-off the trolley is 0000grooved copper wire suspended froma catenary, which consists of 9-32-in.extra high strength steel cable cov-ered with weatherproof insulation toprotect the cable from deteriorationcaused by locomotive gases. The hang-ers or spreaders between the trolleywire and the catenary are placed 10 ft.apart, and consist in each case of aj/2-in. iron pipe flattened at the top tobolt between the lips of a strap clip at-tached to the catenary and threadedat the bottom into the boss of a bronzeclip attached to the trolley wire. Thebronze clip on the trolley wire is heldtogether by four screws, and the en-tire clip is 5 ins. long. The poles are Southern white cedar,and the catenary is carried on side brackets made of extraheavy 2-in. iron pipe. The line is put up with large insulating

STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. 1065 collars slipped over the bracket arm to receive the catenary,this having been designed to facilitate the use of a higher volt-age a. c. trolley at some future time. The whole overheadconstruction, including the clips, spreaders, catenary and arms,with the exception of the trolley wire, has been painted withgraphite paint in order to give protection against locomotivegases. By demonstration it has been found the gases have nodeteriorating effect upon the trolley wire, but the gases do havea tendency to attack unpainted iron or steel. The type of over-head catenary construction used is shown in the accompanyingillustration.
