The company has three-times the number of cars inservice during the rush hours that it has during the middle ofthe day, and this difference is likely, if anything, to be in-creased when the new Fifth Avenue terminal is established. Representatives of the Pavers Union called on General Man-ager Stanley, of the Cleveland Electric Railway Company, afew days ago, to remonstrate with him for employing Italians,who work for $1.65 to $2 a day on paving work, as comparedwith the union scale of 50 cents an hour. The union leadersclaimed the Italians were poor workmen, slow and wasteful,and that it would be cheaper in the long run to employ unionmen at the wage mentioned. Mr. Stanley stated that his com-pany was looking for results, and that he would try a gang ofunion men with a union foreman, and that if they could showthat union labor was cheaper the company would employ unionpavers in the future. The proposition was accepted.
