APPARATUS IN THE ENGINE ROOM OF THE AUTO-CARON THE NORTH-EASTERN RAILWAY of the Leeds forge type, which have their centers 34 ft. apart.The truck wheels are 8-ft. centers and 3 ft. 6 ins. over treads. The direct-coupled petrol-electric generating set is installedin an engine room at one end of the car. This compartmentalso contains a 5-kw exciting dynamo for exciting the generator fields, for charging a small accumulator battery for lighting,etc. The engine compartment also contains a complete set ofcontrollers, regulating resistances, switches and other apparatusfor operating the car. Another set is installed at the other endof the car. The prime mover is a Wolseley 90-hp four-cylinder petrol

ONE OF THE ELECTRIC- AUTO-CARS IN SERVICE ON THE NEWCASTLE DIVISION OF THE NORTH-EASTERN RAILWAY November 5, 1904 ) STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. 843 engine. The fo\.r cylinders are each 8y2-in. bore x 10-in.stroke, giving Si bhp at 420 r. p. m., and 93 hp with an accelera-tion up to 480 r. p. m. The cylinders work in pairs on twocrank pins at 180 degs. from each other, thus obtaining twoimpulses per revolution. The electric generator is of 60-kwcapacity at 500 volts and 450 r. p. ra. The motors on the trucksare each of 50-hp capacity. A 90-amp. battery of forty accu-mulators is contained in a suitable box suspended beneath thecenter of the car. It is used for lighting and for starting thepetrol engine through the exciter. Either Westinghouse automatic air brakes or vacuum auto-matic brakes may be used, the air compressor in one case andthe air pump in the other being driven by a small motor. Pow-erful screw-on compensated hand brakes are also provided, abrake wheel being fixed at each end
