catesonly one-fifth of the maximum voltage it is designed to with-stand, thus giving an open scale and greater sensibility at thepart required. To attain still greater sensibility a spring-pushswitch is provided at the end of the handle, which, when theindication falls below 20 volts, may be depressed and the sensi-bility increased five times. This method of paralleling has the great advantage tiiat theinstrument is close to tlie main switch, and consequently thejjaralleling can lie done much quicker than when two volt-meters are used. This method also is independent of the cali-bration of the instrument itself, since one is always certain thatthe incoming dynamo is at the voltage of tlie Inis-bar.s when themain switch is closed. PNEUMATIC IK.OLLEY-POLE CONTROLLER This device has been in successful operation on the high-speedinterurban lines of the Pacific Electric Railway Company forseveral months, and as a result of extended tests it has been adopted for general use on the interur-ban cars operated bythat company whereliigh speed is re-quired. It is claimed forthis controller tiiat itprevents the trolleywheel from damag-ing;- the overheadwork when it jumi^sthe wire, and elimi-nates the annoyanceand damage causedby a defective springtrolley base in simi-lar service. Com-pressed air is em-ployed for the operation of this controller and is supplied fromthe air-brake reservoir under the car. The consumption of airif. very small in actual operation, and there is little waste, sothat the additional cost from the operation is very slight.AMicn the trolley wheel leaves the wire the pole is automatically The accompanying cut shows the construction details of afender which has been designed to operate automatically, t
