Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Star and Garter, Poland Street - geograph.org.uk - 1073029.jpg |
English: The Star and Garter, Poland Street A public house of this name is recorded here from 1825. The street itself dates back to the late C17 and was probably named to commemorate the victory of John Sobieski, King of Poland, over the Turks in 1683.
"No. 62 is outwardly an early nineteenth-century building with a three-storeyed front. In the ground storey is a contemporary wooden public-house front having narrow pilasters which support a fascia, the latter finished with carved bracket-stops. The upper storeys each have two flat-headed windows, but the brickwork has a much later cement facing with window-surrounds of the same date." From: 'Poland Street Area', Survey of London: volumes 31 and 32: St James Westminster, Part 2 (1963), pp. 243-249. http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=41475 |
