, for the most part wearing uniforms imitated from the French,and looking thoroughly military; the former those dark-skinned semi-Indian soldiers, who showed in the late war against Peru that theycould fight like demons, and kill, plunder, and burn with a savage fe-rocity that few soldiers can equal and none surpass. In order to raise men for that campaign the Government re.laxed, perhaps, its severity of selection, and accepted many bad char-acters, which now remain a curse to the country.
