which struck the crowns of these loftymountain monarchs long before it rose above the horizon of thevalleys at their feet. This was my first glimpse of the Andes, andone of the most impressive and beautiful visions that I have hadthe fortune to contemplate. — Mendoza is one of the very few towns of the Argentine Republicwhich produce at once a favorable impression upon the visitor, andleave in his mind souvenirs that remain satisfactory—at least, from thepicturesque point of view. The plan is the usual rectangular divis-ion into uniform chess-board blocks; the streets are twenty-five andthirty metres broad, with wide sidewalks shaded by lofty and luxuri-ant Carolina poplars. There are five large plazas, each planted withtrees and shrubs; indeed, the town might be described as a group ofshady avenues placed in the centre of an immense park or garden,for the environs, stretching away to the lower spurs of the Andes,are covered with brilliant green vegetation, kept fresh even in the
