Description

Ellis, Joseph. The Soil Zones of Manitoba [map]. 1:3,674,880. In: Joseph Ellis. The soils of Manitoba. [Winnipeg]: Manitoba Economic Survey Board, 1938, figure 13.

This map, prepared in 1937, is the first reliable generalized soils map of Manitoba. It is a very significant contribution to the study of the Province, on par with the geological and vegetation maps of Manitoba produced a generation earlier. An entirely new scientific vocabulary was introduced with this kind of mapping, one which had not been used in the 19th century. Professor Ellis prepared this map from information compiled on the reconnaissance land classification surveys. The major units recognized today are shown on this map, but note that no northern clay belt is shown.
