Text Appearing Before Image:
l working expenses and 4 per cent, interest on capitalis estimated at $3,456,800, which would be covered by tolls, sale of water-power, and income on land and water-rights. The traffic necessary to insure a profit, if reckoned on tollsalone, would have to be 4,000,000 tons yearly. However, tollswould not be the sole source of income, as it is apparent that largereturns would result from the sale of water-rights for electricpower-works and other purposes. As the projected Serbo-Turkish water-way from the Danubeto Salonika will, in conjunction with the Danube-Elbe, theDanube-Oder, and the Danube-Main-Rhine canals, tap therichest and most extensive productive and industrial areas ofcentral Europe, and will furnish the cheapest and shortest routefor their export and import traffic with the Near and FarEast, it appears safe to predict that this water-way will earlycommand the tonnage of traffic necessary to amply justify theServian and the Turkish governments in hastening its con-struction.
