Nothing perhaps can exceed the grandeur of YorkMinster, as a specimen of ancient English architecture.It is justly esteemed the glory of the city in which itstands; and it has become more interesting, from thechanges and injuries, which it has from time to timeundergone. To enter minutely into the particularsrelating to its history and architecture, is, with ourlimited space, impossible : but we can furnish a ge-neral account of the cathedral, and certain dates ofthe different portions of the building as they at pre-sent exist. These, we trust, will prove acceptable toour readers. The first church dedicated to St. Peter, in the cityof York, is supposed to have owed its origin to Ed-wyn, King of the Northumbrians, who was convertedto Christianity, A.D. 627; but it was scarcelj^ finishedwhen that prince fell in battle.
