These curious specimens of architecture afford, per-haps, the most strilcing and remarkable examplesin existence of that important principle of the lawsof gravitation, that a body will be supported, or willstand, provided that its line of direction falls within Usbase- that is to say, in common phrase, providedit keeps its balance. It is almost superfluous toobsierve, that the converse of this principle is equallytrue, that a body will fall if its line of directionfalls without its base; in other words,. if it lose itsbalance. In order to understand the meaning andthe reason of this, it will be necessary to remember,that the attraction of gravitation, or tendency to falltowards the centre of the earth, acts equally on allparts of the same body, and that, consequently,there is a point in every body, around which, inevery direction, it acts equally.
