For three seconds after the roar of theexplosions had died Yut Gar lived. Thenhis head drooped. On the breast of hisblouse was a pattern of nine holes outliningthe classic Wen-li ideograph which meanseverlasting life. Sing Fang returned to his house. Hetore from its place on the door the flaringcrimson ribbon on which was printed YutGars name. He entered his room andwalked to the table whereon lay his brushesand his inks. He moistened a little stoneslab and from a jet-black stick of ink heground enough to fill one of his brushes.On a strip of crimson paper he inscribed theapothecarys name. He pasted this paperupon the door beside the strip which borethe name of his sister. He returned to hisroom and presently he was asleep. Atdawn he wakened his sister. Yut Gar is dead, but a marriage mustnever be postponed. The name of BowLung is beside yours upon the door of myhouse. I would have your wedding accom-plished before night falls.
