THE SATURDAY EVENING POST ouble the Tonnage and the G. T. M. Men who rank as experts on beltingsay that nowhere have they seenor heard of service conditions moresevere than those under which thetrimmer belt works on the Lane-Galloway Mechanical Trimmer at theBaltimore & Ohio Railroads ExportPier, Curtis Bay, Maryland. There, in four loading towers, coal invarying sizes, from dust to 100- and200-lb. lumps, falls down a telescopicchute from 23 to 44 feet high, onto abaffle plate and thence ontothe trimmerbelt. This belt, when the trimmer islowered into the hold of a ship, runsat a high speed, around 2,700 feet perminute, and literally hurls the coal 30to 40 feet to all parts of the hold. The trimming device revolves abouta vertical axis and directs the streamof coal from side to side of the ship.The entire apparatus is original. Itwas developed within the past yearby H. A. Lane, Chief Engineer of theB. & O., and Philip G. Lang, Jr., As-sistant Engineer of Bridges. It is de-signe
