Description

The San Estévan del Rey Mission is a syncretic Acoma-Catholic church located in Acoma Sky City, in the nation of Áakʼu (Acoma Pueblo) in central New Mexico.

The building began construction in 1629, under Spanish authority and using Acoma slave labor. It represents one of the finest architectural examples of a blend between Puebloan and Spanish styles, mirroring the religion practiced here.

The building was unharmed during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. However, the Acoma people killed to local Catholic priest during that movement.
