Summary

[edit]
Description

The Sahara Hotel and Casino marks the northern end of the Strip, and also marks the southern boundary of Las Vegas proper.

Opened in 1952, it had operated continuously since then, and even gained a roller coaster and a NASCAR-themed play area in 1999. But it simply could no longer compete with the newer megaresorts further down the Strip, and forever closed its doors two weeks before this photo was taken.

The closure of the Sahara brings an end to an era in Las Vegas; it was the last hotel on the Strip still dating from the Frank Sinatra/Rat Pack era.

Just to the right of the Sahara is a newer highrise condominium building, one of many built during the real estate bubble. Further to the right is a timeshare building belonging to Hilton Grand Vacations, built in 2000 on the north end of the Las Vegas Hilton property (originally the International, and in the James Bond movie Diamonds Are Forever, the Whyte House).

My vantage point is the parking garage of an even newer Hilton Grand Vacations property, built on the Strip in 2004, where I have been an owner since 2009. A third Hilton Grand Vacations location exists in Las Vegas, on the grounds of the Flamingo, built in 1994.
