Description |
In October 1804, the Russian ship Nadezhda (Hope) entered the port of Nagasaki. On board was the envoy Nicolai Petrovich Rezanov (1764-1807) (the man standing in the middle of the Japanese print on view here) who wanted to engage in trading relations with Japan. The Japanese authorities were very suspicious and, moreover, they did not speak Rezanov’s language. Therefore, the Dutch supreme headman or ‘Opperhoofd’ Hendrik Doeff (1777-1835) acted as intermediary. Doeff pretended to help the Russians, but also did his utmost to sabotage the negotiations in every possible way. After having kept them waiting for months, the Japanese replied that they were not prepared to enter into negotiations with the Russians. Rezanov left, but sent a punitive expedition to North Japan under the command of the naval officers Nicolai Khvostov and Gravriil Davidov (the Khvostoc-Davidov incident). |
