Description

As well as the nuclear reactors, Chernobyl had a military installation, which contained an over-the-horizon radar to detect incoming missiles. It interfered with radios all over Europe with a "tock-tock-tock" sound, and was nicknamed the Russian Woodpecker by radio hams in the West -- NATO intelligence services called it "the Steelyard", and its real (Soviet) name was Duga.

Unfortunately you can't get close to it, but it's OK to photograph it from the road. This shot was taken as we drove out of the Zone.
