This wasthe bombardment of Alexandria, 11th July 1882.Arabi Pasha, who headed the military revolt againstthe Khedive, was determined to drive the hatedforeigner from the country. The Suez Canal, thehighroad to our great Indian Empire, was threat-ened. Riots had broken out in Alexandria; manyEuropeans had been killed, hundreds were seekingshelter on the shipping in the harbour, and the townhad been handed over to pillage. A combined English and French fleet lay inthe outer roads, the senior British officer beingAdmiral Sir Beauchamp Seymour, who flew hisflag in the Aleocandra, Noticing that Arabi washard at work strengthening the fortifications,erecting new batteries, and being constantlyreinforced by fresh troops of the mutinousEgyptian army, he sent in an ultimatum, that,unless work on the fortifications ceased, and thebatteries were for the time handed over to the THE LAUNCH OF A BATTLESHIP
