Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Roundhouse on Belle Isle - geograph.org.uk - 792364.jpg |
English: The Roundhouse on Belle Isle View westwards from the ferry to the Roundhouse, just visible through the trees. The house (the earliest completely round house in England) was built in 1774 by John Plaw to the instructions of influential Nottingham merchant Thomas English. The house and 40-acre island were purchased in 1781 by John Christian Curwen, who made his fortune in the mines of west Cumberland. The island was originally named Long Holme, but Curwen renamed it after his wife, Isabella. Curwen helped to start the Windermere regatta and one of his boats is on display at the Windermere Steamboat Museum. |
