This image shows the statuary portion of the Robert Gould Shaw and Massachusetts 54th Regiment Memorial. There are multiple lines of African American men marching in line with their equipment like muskets, drums, and other items in their hands. On their backs are packs with bedrolls and other items attached to them. Colonel Robert Gould Shaw is depicted riding his horse beside them. The horse's eyes are wide and his mouth is open. Shaw is carrying a sword in his right hand. The sword points forward and down towards the ground. Above all the men is an allegorical figure of an angel either of death or mercy who is floating in the air.
