Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Roaches Hall - geograph.org.uk - 176089.jpg |
English: The Roaches Hall. This 'party house' is situated on the south eastern side of Hen Cloud. Roaches Hall is a former Victorian hunting lodge, built in 1876 by persons unknown (possibly the Byrom Family of Leek) as Argyle House, with stone from local quarries. In 1899 it was purchased by Philip Lancaster Brocklehurst of Swythamley Hall by which time it was known as Roaches or Roches House. It was inherited by his son Sir Philip Lee Brocklehurst in 1904 but was leased by John Hall of Leek from at least as far back as 1888 probably until 1930 or 1931. Sir Philip's brother, Courtney lived in the house from 1932 until he joined up in WW2. He is famous for setting up a zoo in 1936 around Roches House. The animals included wallabies, yaks, various sorts of deer and emus. |
