Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The River Wharfe, Tadcaster. The view north-northwest from the top of the disused railway viaduct and 513856 . The viaduct was built and opened in 1849 by George Hudson 'The Railway King', one time friend of George Stephenson and the Duke of Wellington. Before the line could be completed, Hudson ran into financial difficulties with the collapse of the over-inflated railway share price. Hudson was accused of corruption, bribing MPs and selling land he did not own. He was imprisoned in York Castle for debt in 1865. Eventually the railway was finished and used between 1882 and 1955 to transport goods into the town from mills on the east side of the river.
