| Description |
English: The River Hiz Seen here beside the site of the Lucas Brewery. The river was the water source for the brewery and the cause of its eventual downfall in the 1920's when the Hiz became increasingly dry. Even earlier, in the 19th century, the water supply was unreliable. Francis Lucas, a member of the brewing family at that time, commented "in the winter we refer to the river as the IS, and in the summer, when it dries up, as the WAS". |
