Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Ritz (35626396712).jpg |
Final design by architect António Pardal Monteiro (1928-2012), in collaboration with architect Jorge Ferreira Chaves (1920-1981), revising initial designs worked out by António's uncle, Porfírio Pardal Monteiro (1897-1957) starting in 1952, in a bold move towards the International Style. The Ritz was pet project of dictator Salazar, who was mortified that Lisbon did not have a grandiose and modern luxury hotel catering to jet-setters and the occasional foreign dignitary lured to this fascist backwaters of Europe. In the end, Salazar hated it, because he found it too modern. He visited it once before the inauguration in 1959, sneaked out through the kitchens and never came back. To this day the Ritz remains the epitome of cultured luxury, housing what is in terms of quality and size, the best collection of Portuguese 20th century decorative art www.rtp.pt/play/p2366/e263862/visita-guiada |
