is now a lunatic asylum; beautiful pointed vaul-ting in the adjacent cloisters. The Ch. of St. Godehard, completed 1133, afine Romanesque edifice, was restored 1863. The finest buildings in the town are in the market-place: Rathhaus (1376);Harlessems House (once Templar? Lodge); Leihhaus (or Mont de PiM), withadmirable carving, and Wedekinds House, all of the 16th cent. There arealso many curious old buildings in other parts of the town. NearHildesheim a valuable treasure was found in 1868, consisting ofancient Roman silver plate, supposed once to have belonged to Varus (p. 261),now preserved in the Museum at Berlin (p. 243).
