arious possessors, — Henry IV., Count of Luxem-bourg, afterwards Germ. Emp. as Henry VII. (d. 1312), his sonJohn, the blind king of Bohemia (killed at Cressy, 1346), theBurgundians, the Spaniards, the French (whose eminent engineerYauban reconstructed a great portion of the fortress), and finallythe Germ. Confederation. Luxembourg is designated by Carnot asla plus forte place de IEurope apris Gibraltar, le seul pointdappui pour attaquer la France du cote de la Moselle. Beyond its fortifications and delightful environs, Luxembourgpossesses little to detain the traveller. Of the magnificent castleof the Spanish Governor Count Mansfeld (1545—1604) no vestigeis left, except a gateway in the lower part of the town, intowhich several Rom. reliefs and inscriptions are built. The cele-brated Mansfeld Gardens now only nominally exist in a walk(striking view) along the E. slope of the hill, near the TrevesGate. The traveller who has leisure will be repaid by a walkthrough the entire valley.
