Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Resolute, Poplar High Street 1937 pub, probably replacing an earlier one, named after a famous ship, HMS Resolute, which had local connections: it was fitted out in the Blackwall shipyard, with especially strong timbers and an internal heating system, for use in the Arctic. In 1853 it was sent to search for Sir John Franklin's lost expedition, got frozen into the ice and was recovered by an American whaler and eventually restored and returned in 1856 by the US government as a goodwill gesture to Queen Victoria. In return, when the ship was finally broken up in 1879, a desk made from her timbers was presented to the US President Hayes and has been used by most presidents subsequently.
