Thescenery of the piece is appropriateand well executed ; but of the lastscene, the conflagration of Lovin-skys castle, it is difficult to speakin terms of too much praise. Theascending volumes of fire andsmoke, the successive falling of de-tached parts of the fortifications,and the perilous combats and leapsoi the performers through the midstof the flames, produce an awful sen-sation, mixed with an apprehensionfor their safety. Independently ofthe preceding melodrama, we haveto notice a most amusing burietta,called Hops and Steps, inwhich Mr. Hill sings one or twovery beautiful airs in the Italianstyle; but Mr. De Camp as Bowkitl,the dancing-master, constitutes thesoul of the piece.
